Late goal saves No. 3 Concordia in 2-1 win over Warner Pacific

PORTLAND, Ore.—Rebounding from its first loss of the season, No. 3-ranked Concordia survived a gritty match with a 2-1 win against Warner Pacific College on Saturday afternoon at Tuominen Yard.

It was a game of missed opportunities for both teams early in the match as both sides failed to capitalize on opportunities to send the match into the halftime break in a scoreless draw.

Warner Pacific (5-7-2, 2-2-1 CCC) lifted the first two shots of the match with Mina Cavalli-Singer and Carley Turner taking shots that sailed wide of the posts in the opening 12 minutes of play.

Concordia (11-1-1, 4-1-0 CCC) outshot the Knights 6-2 the rest of the first half but were unable to break free from the Knights' spirited defense until well into the second half.

Following a fortuitous handball in the box by a Warner Pacific defender, Ariel Kanable finally got the Cavs going in the 69th minute. The converted the penalty kick, the team's second of the season, gave Kanable her fourth score of 2014.

Not backing down, Crystal Foster found the equalizer for the Knights in the 74th minute after Concordia failed to clear the ball properly, but just as it appeared the visitors would steal a draw, Ashley Amessaved the day with a well-placed header off a Kanable corner in the 81st minute.

Clamping down after allowing the tying score, the Concordia defense did not allow another shot attempt over the final 16-plus minutes of play to preserve the win. The Cavaliers held a sizable edge in shots, racking up a 21-5 advantage in total takes.

WPC goalkeeper Allie Holterman was credited with seven saves in the contest to help keep the Knights within striking distance.
