KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University came from behind to defeat Warner Pacific with a golden goal in the first overtime period, earning a 2-1 victory in the CCC Championship semifinal.
It looked as though the first half would be a scoreless 45 minute period, but the Knights scored with just 16 seconds on the clock as
Ashley Valencia put the Knights up 1-0. The senior put a blast off the NU goalkeeper's hands and into the upper left corner of the net from 8 yards out on the right side.
The defense went to work for a good part of the second half and it looked as though WPC might be knocking out the CCC's top seed. It was not to be, as Acacia Johnson one touched a cross from teammate Gabi de Andrade to tie the score at 1-1 in the 83rd minute. Crystal Ruvalcaba's shot attempt in the 88th minute was blocked by an NU defender and the game headed into overtime.
Four minutes into the overtime period, Tiffany Taylor would get her right foot on a blast that would make its way into the upper right corner off a set piece and assist by Acacia Johnson.
Allie Holterman was solid in goal for Warner Pacific finishing with nine saves, seven coming in the second half. NU outshot WPC 15-10 with the Knights holding a 7-4 edge on corner kicks.
NU will now move on the championship final for the third straight year and will host Concordia in the final next Saturday.
