Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

WP Wins Home Opener Thanks to Own Goal

PORTLAND, Ore. -  An own goal was the deciding score as Warner Pacific women's soccer secured a victory in their home opener by the score of 1-0 tonight at Damazo field.

The Basics

Score: Warner Pacific 1, Pacific (Ore.) 0
 Records: WPC (1-1-1), PAC (0-1-0)
Location: Kathryn Damazo Field - Portland, Ore.
The Short Story: The Knights were the beneficiaries of the gift goal just 9:45 into the match when a Boxer defender attempted a clearance but instead headed the ball into her own net. That goal would last the rest of the match as the Warner Pacific defense led by goalkeeper Mariah Liebert held firm to earn the clean sheet.

How it Happened

• The Knights controlled possession for a good portion of the game, particularly the first half while outshooting the Boxers 6-1.
• Alexis Smith nearly doubled the lead for the Knights in the first half (35th minute), but her rolling shot clanged off the post.
• Pacific found a better footing after the break, sending six shots at the WP goal.
• The visiting Boxers nearly found the equalizer late in the game, but Kara Lanke's effort also hit woodwork and bounced away.
• Liebert made three saves to earn her first career shutout.

Quotes

"We'll take any win right now," said coach Holly Popenuk. "We are pretty banged up right now and lots of our players are having to put in 90 minute shifts. We had to grind it out towards the end of the second half."
