Portland, Ore. | Warner Pacific hosted the University of Providence on Saturday afternoon for senior night. The (3-8, 3-5CCC) Knights defeated the (5-9, 4-6 CCC) Argos 2-1.
Â
For the first time in five matches, the Knights held their opponent scoreless in the first half. Keeping the ball between the two boxes for the first 45 minutes of play, each team played high and tight, clearing the offensive attack.
Â
After the break, the offensive aggression picked up and both teams began to push the ball, making long runs along the sidelines. The Knights' offensive tempo seemed to be controlled by Senior
Kendyl Cone who would take the ball along the side and send it to the middle, pressuring the Argos' defense. The tactic worked for Cone in the 51
st minute, who took the ball down the right side and sent a cross to the far post where Mikki Dart met it with her foot, as the Knights took the 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later,
Kaitlin Hirasa passed to
Ashley Giesbers who sent a bomb from 15 yards out, making it 2-0.
Â
With just under five to play, the Argos took a corner kick and Ashlee Howell flicked the ball to the far corner of the net off to make it 2-1. Despite the aggressive offense from the Argos, the Knights defense composed themselves and were able to close out the match.
Â
Knights Keeper
Alyssa Guthrie had another remarkable night with nine saves.
Â
Senior
Ashley Giesbers scored her 27
th career goal, she is the All-Time Leading Scorer for the Knights. "I didn't even realize I had the most career goals, I just came out every game with the mentality that I was gonna score and I guess it paid off" Giesbers said about her record.
Â
It being Senior Night, it was clear the Knights wanted to leave an imprint on the home season, and that they did. "I thought this was the best game of the season" Junior Mikki Dart said. "Everyone gave their all for the seniors. We wanted to make their last home game one to remember and I think we did that."
Â
In his first season at the helm of WPU Women's Soccer, coach
Josh Westermann has managed to lead the Knights to a 3-5 record in the Cascade Collegiate Conference with four more matches to play. The team's three wins thus far are the most conference wins for the program in six seasons. It's safe to say Coach Westermann and Women's Soccer have some exciting years ahead.
Â
As the Knights closed out their home campaign for the 2019 season, they will conclude the season on the road. They head to Ashland on Friday October 25
th to face the Raiders of Southern Oregon. The match is set for 1PM.
