Carlos Nelson of Clackamas Provides Another Key Transfer for WPU Track and Field

PORTLAND, Ore. | Warner Pacific University track and field  added another key transfer when Clackamas Community College decathlete Carlos Nelson signed for the 2020-2021 season. Nelson scored in the javelin and decathlon at the NWAC track and field championships in 2019 and is also a competitive high jumper. Nelson plans to major in exercise science as well as continue working at a local job, which was a big plus for staying close for his next step in college.

"I chose Warner Pacific University because it was close to home, which allows to me to keep working at my current job in a good management position. My boss there has been great about working out a schedule where I can keep working while going to school and competing in sports, so that made it all work together. My boss was really great to do that for me!" said Nelson.

WPU Head Track and Field Coach Randy Dalzell was impressed with Nelson's work ethic and welcomed his versatility to their growing track and field program, saying "Carlos is a really versatile athlete, which is why he does the decathlon, and he can throw the javelin and high jump at a very competitive level. He also really impresses me with his work ethic and industriousness about keeping a job while going to school and competing in track. That kind of discipline and hard work is going to pay off for him as he finishes his degree as well as in competition in track. He is a great student and will be a very positive addition to our men's track program. We are really excited to have him join our team!"

Nelson joins a large group of other new athletes who have signed to compete for the Knights in 2020-2021 and continues a wave of momentum for the future. He was looking forward to this spring season of training and competition, but is now focused on the future as he commented, "I am going to miss training with my current team, which is like my family, and the competitions this spring. I was really looking forward to seeing how much we all were improving and progressing from our hard work, but now I have to refocus and get ready for next year. I am really looking forward to meeting my new teammates and forming those same team dynamics with them."
