Warner Pacific University Announces Notice of Elimination of Three Sports Programs

To the Warner Pacific University Community,
 
One of Warner Pacific University's (WPU) great sources of pride has always been our athletic programs. Over the years, our Knights have proven exceptional achievements in both academics and athletics. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic has negatively affected universities across the country. As a result, we have made the extremely difficult decision to no longer sponsor men's and women's cross-country and track and field as well as women's wrestling as varsity sports, effective August 9th, 2021.
 
Today's decision does not end our commitment to the student-athletes within the cross-country, track and field, and wrestling programs. Scholarship commitments will be honored beyond this year for any student-athletes who choose to finish their undergraduate degree at WPU. For student-athletes who wish to transfer to another institution, Warner Pacific Athletics will help them with their transition. During this time, and for the duration of the student-athletes' time at WPU, the athletic department will offer counseling and mental health services for those who would find them of assistance.
 
Like other institutions presented with similar obstacles, we made this decision with the best interest of our student-athletes in mind. In our in-depth analysis, we determined this will help create a sustainable path for our Athletic Department, and ultimately enhance the first-class experience of the remaining student-athletes for years to come.
 
While this decision has proven to be very difficult, we believe it is part of WPU's strategy to support our vision of providing affordable, life-changing education.

After much prayer and consideration, this decision was not an easy one. I always have and will continue to acknowledge and support the great student-athletes that make up Warner Pacific Athletics and I want them to know that I stand by these men and women in their pursuit of academic and athletic success. I am cognizant of the fact that this decision impacts a number of individuals, yet I am confident that this is the right decision at this time.
