Portland, Ore.| Warner Pacific University Women's Soccer defeated the Arizona Christian Firestorm in the final seconds of the game on a cloudy afternoon at Eastside Timbers Athletic Complex.
Â
After a back and forth start the Knights had to stay organized and soak up pressure, which they did, showing resilience and leadership throughout the half.
Â
Injuries saw Coach
Justan Wolvert look to his bench for support, with the Knights utilizing almost all of their roster. Madison Goss and Kaya Gramps provided an attacking threat throughout the game, finishing the game with 8 combined shots. However, it was substitute Kassi Burkowski who had the decisive touch today.
Â
The second half saw Arizona Christian gain more control over the ball, forcing the Knights to sit deep in their half and work tirelessly on defense. Multiple Knights defenders made crucial tackles, while goalie Katie Pomerinke made sure that nothing was going to get by her.
Â
During an injury break with 2 minutes remaining in the game, the Knights and their coaching staff rallied together for one last push. And that push came with 3 seconds remaining in the game. After a scrappy attack deep into Arizona Christian's box, the ball popped out to Burkowski who smashed the ball into the back of the net to seal the season opener.
Â
Warner Pacific begins their season with a win, but even more importantly, the Knights put in a total team performance.

Next up, the Knights host Lewis & Clark College at Eastside Timbers Athletic Complex for an exhibition on Saturday, August 27
