Portland, OR | The Warner Pacific Women's Soccer squad won their first game of the season against Park University tonight at Eastside Timbers Complex by a final score of 2-1.
The Knights left the field victorious after a hard fought 2-1 win against Park University on Thursday evening. The Knights started the game off a little slow letting Park University get the first 4 shots and kept the ball on their side of the pitch for a while.
Once the Knights settled into the game, the tide started to turn. The first goal of the game for the Knights went to
Shalece Easley on an assist by
Kiya Gramps in the 30
th minute. Gramps shot the ball at the net and Easley was there to gather up the rebound and put it in the back of the net. It wasn't just the first goal of the game but it was the first goal of the season for the Knights. Easley is a transfer from Clark College where she spent her first two years of ball. To come in and score the first goal of the season for her new team had to feel good for her.
The second goal of the game was an emotional one in the 40
th minute by senior,
Maddie Goss, who was playing in her first game back from a huge injury that she suffered last September. The goal came right after a foul on Park that had Goss on the ground grabbing her leg. Luckily, she was okay and took the penalty kick putting it in the back of the net. It was an emotional scene on the field and on the sidelines considering the circumstances that was connected to the goal. Everyone knew how much that goal meant for her.
Head Coach, Justan Wolvert, knows that winning the first game is very important for the team going forward. "I was pleased with our first half," Wolvert said. "It's always good to see the ideas and patterns from the training ground make an appearance in the game. We struggled at times dealing with Park's pressure in the second half but did just enough to hang on for the result. Always good start the season with a win and am looking forward to the opportunity to collect another win against Douglas on Friday."
Winning the first game of the season is a rare feat for the Knights which makes this very impressive. The women's soccer program was created back in 2002 and have only won their first game six times. They won their first game of the year in 2007, 2011, 2016, 2017, 2022, and this season in 2023. Justan Wolvert is undefeated in the first game of the season winning last years first game against Arizona Christian University by a score of 1-0.
True freshman,
Litzy Gonzalez, started her first ever regular season college soccer game today and got the win. She only gave up one goal on a tough shot by Park's, Emma Alvarez. Other than the one goal, Gonzalez was excellent saving 4 shots. It was a great way to start her career as a Knight.
