Angwin, Calif.| The Knights started their non-conference season today with a huge road victory against Pacific Union College down in gorgeous Wine Country USA.
The first goal of the game came on a great run from
Kiya Gramps who stopped about ten yards out and passed back to
Jackie Castellanos who was trailing beautifully and slammed it in over the head of the Pioneers goalkeeper. The goal came just five minutes and sixteen second into the season which happens to be the program record for the fastest goal recorded in any first game of the season.
The Knights gave up their first goal of the game early in the second half knotting the score up at one apiece. Both teams then kept things even for a while until just under seven minutes left in the contest when
Shalece Easley destroyed the tie with a goal that featured an amazing 30-yard lead pass from
Kelsey Cordon that hit Easley in stride who then hit the shot from about 10 yards out. The Knights then played a little add on to put the game out of reach with just under four minutes left in the game.
Kiya Gramps scored on a cross sent in by
Shalece Easley who picked up the assist.
It was the perfect way to start the season and Knights Head Coach, Justan Wolvert, understands how huge it is to win the first game of any season and the type of momentum it can bring to the team moving forward.
"A solid performance from start to finish from us today," Justan Wolvert said. We defended well and stayed organized throughout while creating several good opportunities in the attack. We're a group that's still getting to know each other and we have some positional and technical issues to clean up but getting a win on the road against a quality opponent is a tremendous way to start the season. The ladies should be very proud of their performance today. They showed up and competed and were rewarded with the win. We're looking forward to carrying this momentum on to the training ground in preparation for our next match."
The Knights will enjoy their time at Konocti Harbor Resort the rest of the day before returning home tomorrow evening and preparing for their next game. The Knights will be in action on August 21st for a scrimmage against the University of Fraser Valley and then will return to regular season play August 24th against Simpson University at the friendly confines of Eastside Timbers Complex.
