Great Falls, Mont.| The Warner Pacific University women's soccer team earned a hard-fought conference victory on the road Sunday afternoon, defeating the University of Providence 1-0.
Warner Pacific struck first in the 34th minute when
Litzy Gonzalez found the back of the net to give the Knights a 1-0 advantage. The opening goal ultimately proved to be all the offense Warner Pacific would need as the Knights' defense held strong for the remainder of the match.
The Knights generated five shot attempts in the opening 45 minutes while holding Providence to just one. Warner Pacific goalkeeper
Evelyn Montiel Silva recorded one first-half save to preserve the 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.
Warner Pacific continued to apply pressure after the break, adding seven more shot attempts in the second half to finish with 12 for the match, including five on goal.
Katya Tercek and
Clarisa Lemus led the WPU attack with four shots apiece, while Gonzalez finished with two shots and the match-winning goal.
Defensively, the Knights delivered a stellar team effort to keep the Argonauts off the scoreboard. The Warner Pacific back line limited Providence to just four total shots and three on goal throughout the 90 minutes. Montiel Silva added two second-half saves to complete the clean sheet, finishing with three saves on the afternoon.
Warner Pacific controlled much of the action throughout the match, outshooting Providence 12-4 and generating two corner kicks in the second half. The physical conference battle saw seven fouls called against the Knights and eight against Providence, with neither side receiving a card.
Next Up
The Knights will look to build off the road victory when they return home on Friday to host Bushnell University. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. at the Eastside Timbers Sports Complex.
