Knights Fall to #18 Southern Oregon

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. – Southern Oregon won their sixth straight Cascade Conference match with a 3-0 sweep of Warner Pacific inside C.C. Perry Gym tonight.

The outcome was closer than might have been expected, as Warner Pacific matched the 18th ranked Raiders kill for kill. The host Knights had 33 total kills compared to 35 for SOU. The difference was in errors, as WPC had 22 miscues on the attack while Southern Oregon had just 10.

The two teams battled back and forth in the first set, and Carly Barker put away a kill for WPC to tie the score at 16-16. The high-powered Raiders took over from there and rattled off the final nine points to win the frame 25-16.

Set two was just as close but this time till the end, as the score was tied 13 times. The Knights had hope of stealing the frame after an SOU error allowed WPC to pull within one at 21-20. Spikes from the Raiders' Megan Bartling and Haley Fisko created breathing room however, and a Knight error gave the set to Southern Oregon.

The Raiders were determined to end the match in straight sets and jumped out to a 12-3 lead. Later in the set SOU held a 20-9 lead and looked to cruise to the win, but Warner Pacific didn't go without a fight. The Knights went on a 6-1 run behind the serving of Amanda Richards and closed the gap to 21-16. SOU's Natalie Scheller stepped up for two big kills down the stretch however, and pushed the Raiders to the 25-18 win.

Sarah Holgen led SOU with nine kills, while Megan Bartling added eight kills and four blocks. Renee Yomtob contributed a match high 14 digs.

Freshman Carly Barker swung for a career high nine kills for the Knights, while Loren Hernandez added eight. Kelsey Kurtz touched up a match high 29 assists.
