COSTA MESA, Calif. - Warner Pacific's six-game winning streak came to an end today in the second game of the Vanguard University Thanksgiving Tournament.
Concordia (Calif.) handed the Knights an 84-78 defeat, dropping WPC to 6-2 on the season. The Eagles, ranked #1 in the latest NAIA Div. I poll, improved to 4-2.
WP got off to another good start, scoring the first five points of the game. The Knights kept the lead for all of the first period, and enjoyed a 26-15 advantage with 9:11 remaining after a three point goal from
Coletun Tarr. The largest lead in the game for WP came just a few minutes later, as
Stephen Harris put the Knights up 30-17.
The Eagles fought back at that point, eventually trimming the margin all the way down to a single basket (36-34). WPC managed to score five straight points to close out the period - all by Tarr as he sliced to the rim for a layup and drained an attempt from distance.
After the break,
Doug Thomas scored inside to give the Knights a 45-37 lead just a few minutes in the second period. Concordia used a 13-1 run at that point, punctuated by a trey from DeLaun Frazier to overtake WP on the scoreboard.
Midway throught the second half, CU forged their largest lead of nine points (62-53) thanks to a Tim Harris layup and the Eagles looked in control. Warner Pacific did not go quietly however, and battled back to take a 70-69 lead with 4:17 left in the contest.
The Eagles proved too strong down the stretch, and climbed back in front with clutch shooting. After four straight free throws from Harris in the final minute, the Eagles were back up by 10 (84-74). A basket from
Garrett Strasburg and a pair of free throws from Tarr were too little, too late for Warner Pacific.
Doug Thomas scored 20 points for the Knights to lead all scorers. Tarr finished with a season high 17 points, while
Stephen Harris addied 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Dakota Downs and Peter Smith each scored 19 points for Concordia.
