EUGENE, Ore. - The Knight men's basketball team needed overtime to conquer a strong challenge from New Hope Christian at the Rexius Event Center yesterday, defeating the Beacons 87-81.
Doug Thomas dropped in 22 points on 9 of 17 shooting to lead Warner Pacific (2-1).
Stephen Harris added 14 points and five rebounds.
NHCC was led by Drew Wiley's 22 points and eight rebounds, helping the host Deacons (1-3) to 48% shooting and an 11 rebound advantage on the glass.
The first period was close throughout, as the score was tied seven different times and neither team led by more than four points. A basket from Wiley at the end of the half gave NHCC at 40-36 advantage at the break.
Warner Pacific came out house of fire to start the second period thanks to back-to-back three pointers from
Ryan Parks in the first 30 seconds. The Knights applied a full court press that rattled the hosts and allowed WP to score 12 unanswered points in the first two minutes of the half.
The Deacons whethered the storm however, and responded with an 11-0 run of their own to take a 51-48 lead.
The Knights slowly pulled in front from that point and led 74-66 with 4:05 remaining in the game. Corey Gantt drained a pair of treys to bring NHCC back however, and the Deacons outscored WP 9-1 down the stretch to send the game to overtime.
Thomas started the overtime period with an immediate three pointer, and the Knights did not trail in the extra time. Forrest Stolk made a free throw to make the score 83-81 with 41 seoncds to play, but NHCC would not score again. Free throws from Thomas and
Coletun Tarr provided the final margin.
