Knights Win Overtime Thriller on Senior Night

Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. - Warner Pacific chalked up their second Cascade Conference win of 2013 with a 3-2 decision over Evergreen tonight at David Douglas High School. Trisha Durham scored a goal in the first overtime period to send the Knights to the victory on senior night.

Durham provided the game winner for the second time in as many games, and also added two assists on the night.

The host Knights (3-7, 2-5 CCC) were the aggressors in the opening minutes, but it was Evergreen that scored first. A cross was driven into the box in the 15th minute that bounced off a WPC defender and into the net. The rest of the first half was uneventful, save a shot from WP's Ashley Valencia that clanged off the crossbar in the 38th minute.

The two sides settled in for the second period struggle and Evergreen (3-9, 2-5 CCC) was successful in turning aside all attacks from WPC until the 79th minute. Roxana Gomez found Durham at the penalty spot, and the senior flicked the ball ahead to a waiting Victoria Parker who finished from eight yards away.

Not satisfied with a tie, the visiting Geoducks went in search of a game winner and found it at the 84:26 mark. Sophie Krauza planted herself underneath a punt from Knight goalkeeper Allie Holterman and headed the ball forward to a sprinting Rayna Murphy. The ESC forward knew what to do with the breakaway chance and scored her second goal of the season.

Warner Pacific did not give up and found the equalizer in the 89th minute from an unlikely source. Knight coach Holly Popenuk threw on backup goalkeeper Cathy Lara at forward and the freshman delivered in a big way. Trisha Durham found a sliver of space in the box and drew two Geoduck defenders to her back. Durham turned and found Lara unmarked, and the substitute flicked the ball home to send the game to overtime.

Warner Pacific tallied the game winner five minutes into extra time thanks to an Evergreen miscue. The Knights sent forward a seemingly harmless ball into their attacking half, but a pair of Geoduck defenders did not communicate on the clearance. WP's Ashley Valencia pounced on the free ball and found Durham open for an 18 yard strike past Evergreen keeper Kyla Kitts.

The contest was the last home game for Knight seniors Durham, Kiki McDonagh, Erin Lloyd, and Hannah Millhollen.
