PORTLAND, Ore. - 12th ranked Warner Pacific claimed a share of the 2012-13 Cascade Conference Championship and its 8th consecutive berth to the NAIA National Championship March 6-12 in Branson, Mo. after a hard fought win over The College of Idaho, 69-56, at
Bart Valentine Court tonight.
Warner Pacific and Eastern Oregon are CCC Co-Champions after finishing the conference portion of the season with identical records of 15-3. The Knights earned the top overall seed in the CCC tournament holding the tie-breaking advantage over EOU and WP also earns one of the two automatic qualifiers to the NAIA DII National Championship. The other AQ is awarded to the CCC tournament champion which begins Wednesday February 20th when Warner Pacific hosts #8 seed Corban at 7 p.m.
College of Idaho secured the #4 seed with a 11-7 league record and will host #5 seed Northwest University in the first round.
The visiting Yotes owned the run of play in the early action and led 14-8 after eight minutes had ticked off the clock. WP slowly fought back and used a 5-0 in the final 40 second of the half to lead 31-29 at the break.
The Knights never trailed in the second half, but had to fight for every advantage versus the hard-working Yotes. WP gained a little breathing room after
Jeremy Jones put the Knights ahead 41-31 with 14:50 on the clock. C of I went on a 13-4 run at that point to trim the gap to a single point (45-44). Antonio Garrett scored inside three straight possessions during the burst.
Warner Pacific responded however, and back to back three pointers from
Ryan Parks got the Knights back on track.
Marcus Moore got a steal and layup with 7:23 on the clock to push the Knights lead back to ten (56-46) and the Yotes drew no closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Parks and
Stephen Harris shared high honor with 18 points each, while Harris also grabbed 11 rebounds.
Antonio Garrett made 9 of 11 field goal attempts on the way to a game high 19 points for College of Idaho.
