PORTLAND, Ore. – Warner Pacific opened their 2013 home volleyball schedule with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-20) sweep of Simpson University (Calif.) tonight at C.C. Perry Gym.
The host Knights (1-6) hit for a season high .252 percent and pounded out 48 kills during the match, with Julia Toscano swinging for 15 winners.
It was the first match of the season for the Redhawks (0-1), but the jitters may have belonged to Warner Pacific. Simpson jumped out to a 13-9 lead in set one and held a 20-15 advantage late in the frame. WPC won 10 of the next 13 points behind a pair of service aces and big hitting from Toscano to complete the comeback.
Set two was close throughout with six lead changes and 10 tie scores. The score was tied for the final time at 23-23, with a Toscano kill and a Simpson error giving the game to Warner Pacific.
The final set looked to be a comfortable victory for the Knights after WP grabbed a 20-13 lead thanks to a kill from Marchelle Bostic. Simpson had other ideas and reeled off six straight points, aided by five consecutive attacking errors from the host team. The Knights put the frame away with a big block from Kristina Naff and Rachel Warick, followed by a Naff kill.
In addition to Toscano's 15 kills and 11 digs, Warner Pacific received a career high 10 kills versus just two errors from Kristina Naff. Marchelle Bostic touched up 26 assists.
Simpson was led by Audrey Green with 13 kills and 12 digs. Kelly Tycksen contributed 19 assists.
