Knights Score at the Death, Defeat 'Yotes in 2OT

Alberto Casas
Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. - Francisco Duenas headed in a goal with 14 seconds remaining in the second overtime period to send Warner Pacific past The College of Idaho 4-3 today in Portland.

The freshman from Salem latched on to the end of a long crossing pass from Edgar Contreras in the dying seconds, and nodded in the game winner. It was a redemptive result for Duenas, who was the unfortunate culprit of an own goal in the second period.

The visiting 'Yotes (1-6, 1-2 CCC) got off to a dream start in the opening action by scoring in the ninth minute. Christian Sanchez leaped high for a headed goal after a corner kick delivery from Joao Cardoso.

The Knights (2-3, 1-2 CCC) answered with a goal in the 23rd minute from Alberto Casas, who found space at the edge of the box and fired home from 10 yards.

Casas struck again just after halftime, lacing a shot from 18 yards in the 55th minute to give WPC a 2-1 advantage. C of I tied the game less than four minutes later by way of the own goal, as a driven crossing pass bounced off of Duenas and into the WP net.

College of Idaho claimed the lead at the 81:17 mark thanks to a well placed penalty kick from Yan Gioseffi. Cardoso earned the try after getting fouled in the penalty area.

With time running short in regulation, Almir Celebic gave the Knights new life with a well taken goal from 15 yards. The score evened the game at 3-3 and sent the contest to extra time.

Both teams had a chance at goal in the first overtime. Cardoso cracked a curling free kick in the 98th minute, but WP keeper Dorian Lair pushed the shot around his far post. Edgar Contreras had a tantalizing look from 8 yards in the 100th minute, but his shot was directed right at 'Yote keeper Colin Benham-Marin.

A draw was the likely outcome after an uneventful second overtime, but Contreras cut to the middle of the field in the final moments and lofted his hopeful pass. Duenas streaked in from his outside defense position and provided the deciding score.

Warner Pacific had the advantage in total shots for the game, 12-6. College of Idaho had eight corner kicks compared to three for the host Knights.

C of I head across town to face Concordia tomorrow, while Warner Pacific will host Oregon Tech.
