OLYMPIA –The Evergreen State College finished with a .279 attack percentage to defeat visiting Warner Pacific, 25-21, 20-25, 25-15, 25-18, in a Cascade Collegiate Conference volleyball match played Saturday evening at CRC Gymnasium.
Brandee Victorino ended up with 13 kills and a .458 attack percentage and Nicole Diehl added a match-high 15 kills to pace the Geoducks, who ended a six-match losing streak. Evergreen improved to 12-14 overall and 3-10 in the CCC, good for a tie with Warner Pacific. In addition to their 3-10 conference mark, the Knights are 5-13 overall.
Warner Pacific took its only lead of the first set on the opening point, but once Evergreen went up 2-1 on a Knights attack error it never again trailed. The Geoducks twice led by five points in the early going, the first at 9-4 on a kill by Nicole Pittelkau. The Knights were able to pull within one point at 21-20 before Evergreen closed the match out with four of the final five points. Pittelkau ended it with one of her five kills in the set.
Evergreen hit .250 in the first set to Warner Pacific's .128, and those numbers were basically switched as the Knights won the second set.
Devan Belshe had five kills without an error in 10 attempts and
Janessa White added five more kills as the Knights hit .237 in the set, their best of the night.
Kelsey Merritt's eight digs also helped as WPC took a 25-20 set victory. Warner trailed 20-19 after a kill by Diehl, but it closed the match with the final six points, three coming on service aces. The Geoducks hit just .135 in the set.
After the break, Evergreen came out with a balanced and impressive offensive attack, finishing with a .419 attack percentage. Ivy Eakes and Victorino both recorded four kills to lead the offense. Warner Pacific, meanwhile, hit just .111, their lowest of any of the four sets. The Geoducks broke away from a 4-4 tie and steadily built their lead before Eakes finished off the set with a kill.
The fourth set was highlighted by the play of Evergreen senior libero Natimia Barker-Doss, who had 11 of her match high 23 digs. Diehl added five kills, Victorino had four in six attempts, and the Geoducks hit .333 in the set to .186 for Warner Pacific.
Jaclyn Trinque had an impressive match with 44 assists, three service aces and five kills in seven attempts for Evergreen.
Warner Pacific's leaders included White and Belshe with 14 and 11 kills, respectively,
Hannah Wright with 37 assists and Merritt with 18 digs. The Knights had just one team block and committed four block errors.
