No Treat: Cavs Trick WPC on Senior Night

PORTLAND, Ore. – Concordia kept their slim title hopes alive with a 3-0 sweep of Warner Pacific on senior night for the host Knights.

The Basics

 Score: Concordia 3, Warner Pacific 0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-16)
 Records: CU (16-7, 13-3 CCC), WPC (5-16, 3-13 CCC)
Location: C.C. Perry Gym, Portland, Ore.
The Short Story:  The host Knights hoped to upset Concordia and send their five seniors to a win in their last home match, but the Cavaliers steadily pulled away in each set to claim the CCC victory in straight sets. CU attacked at a .358 percentage compared to .074 for WPC which was the deciding factor across all three games.

How It Happened

• The teams battled back and forth in set one, and the Knights trailed just 13-12 after a Nicole Kincaide kill.
Briana Hogan swung for two winners to help CU move out to a 21-14 lead that held to the end.
• Concordia methodically gained the advantage in set two, turning an 8-7 lead into a 20-11 gap with kills from five different players.
• WPC managed to earn a 6-4 lead in the early going of set three. Janessa White pounded out a pair of kills and Kelsey Merritt served over an ace to get the Knights going.
• The lead was short lived as CU reeled off five straight points to move ahead 10-7.
• The Knights responded with three points of their own behind kills from Devan Belshe and Allahna Hartwick to tie the score at 10-10.
• The Cavs put the match away thanks to four more kills from Hogan and four errors from WP.

Notable

• Warner Pacific seniors Brittney Bevens, Devan Belshe, Marchell Bostic, Allhana Hartwick, and Kelsey Merritt were honored before the game.
