Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Knight Rally Falls Short in Home Opener

PORTLAND, Ore. - Concordia-Irvine visited Bart Valentine Court for the second year in a row, and once again edged Warner Pacific in a close game in non-conference men's basketball action.

The Basics

 Score: Concordia-Irvine 96, Warner Pacific 89
 Records: CUI (2-0), WPC (2-1)
Location: C.C. Perry Gym, Portland, Ore.
The Short Story: Concordia-Irvine built a 22 point first half lead, then held off a Warner Pacific rally in the second half to earn the road victory in Portland. Six Eagles scored in double figures in a balanced offensive attack. The host Knights tried to make the comeback behind 18 second half points from Coletun Tarr, but time ran out versus a quality squad.

How it Happened

Concordia scored the first five points of the game and never trailed.
• Warner Pacific trailed just 17-16 after two Laron Daniels free throws.
• The Eagles proceeded to go on a 20-1 run to take control of the game.
• Though WPC recovered to cut the gap back down to 11 after a Doug Thomas three point play, CUI surged back to their largest advantage (54-32) with 1:36 on the clock.
• Ryan Parks nailed a trey and Josh Black floated in a layup to make the score 54-37 at the break.
• The visitors maintained their lead for the entirety of the second half, but could not completely shake the resilient Knights.
• Lucas Simpson scored inside for CUI to provide a seemingly comfortable 70-50 lead with 10:48 to play.
• An 8-0 run from WP capped by another trey from Parks quickly cut the difference down to 12 points.
• A basket from Tarr reduced the CUI lead to single digits (85-77) with 1:56 to play.
• Concordia held the Knights at bay down the stretch with steady free throw shooting and timely buckets.

Notable

• Parks made five three pointers, putting him just 13 away from the all-time record at Warner Pacific (Josh Jackson - 238)
• Concordia defeated the Knights 79-73 in Portland last year.
