ATHERTON, Calif. – Warner Pacific started fast, then held off a late charge from Cal Maritime on the way to a 58-52 win in the first game of the Peninsula Classic at Menlo College.
The Basics• Score: Warner Pacific 58, Cal Maritime 52• Records: WPC (8-7, 1-2 CCC), CSUM (6-5)• Location: Haynes-Prim Pavillion, Atherton, Calif.• The Short Story: The Knights ran out quickly to a 13-3 lead in the first half, then did enough the rest of the game to earn a non-conference victory over the Keelhaulers tonight. Cal Maritime actually led the game on two occasions early in the second half, but WP recovered and enjoyed an advantage that reached as many as nine points. Jordan Wilcox shook off a scoreless first period to can four three-pointers and finish with a team high 12 points. Lindsay Loe also put a slow start behind her to finish with 12 points and eight rebounds. How it Happened• The Knights were stingy defensively in the early action, holding Maritime without a field goal for nine minutes.• Daesha Jackson gave WP a spark with two makes from distance in the first half.• The Keelhaulers finished the first half on a 10-4 run to close the gap, making the score 23-20 at the break.• Joie Camalo hit a three pointer to give CSUM their first lead of the game (28-26) early in the second half. • A few moments later Jackson hit a short jumper to put WP back in the lead for good at 31-30.• Loe gave WPC their largest lead of the second half (45-36) with an interior score at the 9:36 mark.• CSUM rallied to cut the deficit to 54-51 with 2:56 to play, but went 0 of 4 down the stretch.• Loe again came up with a clutch basket, and Kyeli Hendryx made a pair of free throws to seal the game for the Knights.Notable• The result was Head Coach
