Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. - #4 seed Northwest University advanced in the Cascade Conference Tournament with a 70-55 win over #5 seed Warner Pacific tonight in Portland.
Dak Shagren connected on all eight of his shots and scored a season high 23 points, helping the visiting Eagles to their first victory at
Bart Valentine Court since 2004.
It was the host Knights that started quickly in building a 7-2 lead, but NU went on a 19-2 run over the next nine minutes to take command. WPC gathered themselves for the remainder of the half and cut the NU advantage down to eight before settling for a 10 point deficit at the break (34-24).
The teams battled shot for shot for much of the second period, but clear looks at the rim were hard to come by for Warner Pacific. Northwest began to stretch their advantage as the half ticked away, and led by 19 points (64-45) with 3:46 to play after Michael Greene scored in the paint.
The Knights caught a glimmer of hope at that point by scoring seven straight points, capped by a three pointer from
Marcus Moore. Northwest maintained the lead thanks to making six of eight free throws in the final minutes, while WP managed to hit just 1 of 4 attempts from the field and committed two turnovers.
Doug Thomas scored 17 points to lead the Knights, while
Garrett Strasburg muscled inside to add 12 points. WP as a team made just 35 percent (20 of 57) of their field goal attempts.
In addition to Shagren's 23, Michael Greene scored 14 points and Nemanja Grujicic tallied a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
Warner Pacific ends their season with an overall record of 16-15 and misses the NAIA National Tournament for the first time in eight seasons.
Northwest moves to 20-10 on the year and will host Northwest Christian on Saturday in a CCC Semifinal clash.
