Volleyball Opens Season With Loss to CSU-San Marcos

Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. - Warner Pacific Volleyball showcased their revamped roster today versus Cal State San Marcos, but it was the visiting Cougars that came away with the win in Portland. The match was the season opener for both teams.

The Basics

• Score: Cal State San Marcos 3, Warner Pacific 0 (25-13, 27-25, 25-18)

• The Short Story: Jordan Banich swung for 13 kills versus just one error to lead the visiting Cougars over Warner Pacific in a non-conference match. WPC's Janessa White matched that performance with 13 kills, but the Knights as a team attacked at a .111 clip compared to .323 for CSUSM. 

How It Happened

• CSUSM used a 11 to 2 burst to turn a 9-8 score into a 20-11 lead in the first set.
• Banich swung for five kills in the first frame without an error. 
• The Cougars as a team had 14 kills and zero errors in set one.
• Warner Pacific jumped out to a four point advantage in set two (8 to 4) thanks to four Cougar errors and kills from White and Cara Wonsley.
• CSUSM fought back and tied the set at 15-15.
• Three kills from White down the stretch of set two allowed WP to tie the score for the last time at 25-25.
• Banich closed out the set with back-to-back kills.
• The Knights improved their attacking to .189 in set two, but the Cougars still managed .256 despite seven errors in the frame.
• After Allahna Hartwick put down her third kill of set three, the Knights trailed by just two (11-9).
• Five straight points from the Cougars which included a service ace from Kelli McLin put the match out of reach at 19-11.

WPC Stats Of Note

• 2012 All-CCC player Devan Belshe made her return from injury with five kills and eight digs.
• Marchelle Bostic added to her career leading assist total with 28.

Up Next

• The Knights head to Forest Grove for an all-day scrimmage event at Pacific University on Wednesday, August 20. The team will face multiple teams in non-counting tune-up matches.
