Young, Cannefax Lead WPC Over Mountaineers

PORTLAND, Ore. - Xavier Cannefax scored 20 points in his season debut for Warner Pacific matching 20 from Taylor Young, leading the 24th ranked Knights to a 91-75 win over Eastern Oregon tonight in CCC play.

The Short Story

Coming off the bench in his first game Xavier Cannefax tossed in 20 points, complementing Taylor Young's 20 point six assist effort during a victory over the visiting Mountaineers. The Knights continue to shoot a high percentage, scoring at a 52 percent clip (23 of 61) over the 40 minutes of action. Eastern Oregon didn't make it easy for WP, trailing just 54-51 in the second half but the Knights slowly pulled way down the stretch and built an 18-point advantage with under 2 minutes to play.

How it Happened
.
• EOU looked like the better team in the early action, with Trell Washington and Case Rada pushing the Mounties to a 16-11 advantage.
• A 7-0 run from WP erased the deficit however, and Charles Honest gave the Knights the lead for good a few moments later (21-19) with a pair of free throws.
• De'Jon Bowman scored a fast break bucket to make the score 30-21, but the Mounties answered with baskets from Brandon Hoston and Caulin Bakalarski to draw within four points (32-28).
• The Knights responded with eight straight points and enjoyed a 12 point advantage with two minutes left in the first half, but watched Trell Washington tally consecutive baskets to cut the lead to 46-39 at the break.
• In early 2nd half action a thunderous dunk from WP's Collin Malcolm was answered with a trey from Bakalarski, and that jumper trimmed the Knight lead down to just three points (52-49) with 15:02 on the clock.
• Cannefax found his rhythm midway through the period and put the Knights on his back, scoring 10 straight points and pushing WP to a 70-59 lead.
• WPC continued to find good looks at the rim as the game wore on, while getting several key stops in their extended zone defense.
• The Knights made 6 of 6 attempts from the free throw line down the stretch, negating six quick points from EOU's Tate de Lavega.
