PORTLAND, Ore. - Warner Pacific snapped a four game losing streak with a 84-70 upset win over 12th ranked Eastern Oregon tonight at Bart Valentine Court.
In a season where consistent play has eluded WPC as a team, the Knights were able to prevent big runs from the Cascade Conference's top scoring squad.
Collin Malcolm carried the Knights offensively in the first half, tossing in 17 points. He then handed the scoring over to
Josh Thomas in the second half, as the junior guard chipped in 14 points including consecutive three pointers with the game still in doubt.
The result was a surprise not only because of EOU's high ranking, but also because the visiting Mountaineers sprinted out to a 15-5 lead and had the home team reeling to start the game.Â
After a timeout to regroup, the Knights steadily climbed back into the game and eventually took their first lead at 21-20 after three free throws from
Kaleb Tompkins. Brian McGriff countered with a jump shot to give EOU the lead again, but Malcolm splashed a three pointer on the next possession to give WP the advantage for good.
The Knights enjoyed a seven point lead at halftime, then kept EOU at arms length for the final period. The gap grew to as many as 16 points (71-55) as stubborn defense and key hoops from Thomas put Warner Pacific in the driver's seat.
McGriff netted 17 points on top of 12 total rebounds to lead EOU. The guard duo of Max McCullough and Blake O'Donnell each added 15 more points and combined for five assists.Â
For Warner Pacific,
Collin Malcolm played all 40 minutes on the way to 23 points and 11 rebounds - his 11th double-double of the season.
Josh Thomas dropped in a season high 18 points including a 3 of 4 effort from the three point line.
