Portland, Ore. | The Warner Pacific University Knights hosted the Beacons of Northwest Christian University on a very cold and brisk Fall Saturday afternoon at Eastside Timbers Sports Complex.
Â
The Knights and the Beacons played an even match, physically, but it seemed possession seemed to find itself at the feet of the Knights for majority of the match.
Â
From the start, it was clear that Warner Pacific University was looking to score and get a W, and that's exactly what they did.
Â
After a pretty equally matched first half, with both teams taking five shots but ended 0-0, both teams seemed to come out of half with a sense of urgency to get on the scoreboard.
Â
The second half started with a near goal from
Kendyl Cone, who seemed to miss the net by centimeters, sending one a hair too wide. Cone's shot attempted set the aggressive offensive tone for the Knights, who made it clear they weren't going into to overtime. In the 82
nd minute, the Knights attacked the NCU goal, again, led by Cone at the front who sent a beautiful cross-ball across the net to meet the foot of
Makayla Martinez for the go-ahead goal as the Knights picked up their first win of the season.
Â
"The ladies have been working extremely hard and this has been a long time coming." says Head Coach
Josh Westermann, "they played with heart and left it all on the field. It's such a privilege to get to coach them and looking forward to many more wins to come."
Â
Sophomore
Makayla Martinez, who scored the lone goal of the match had a lot say following the match, "I felt our movement as a team was a lot better today, as well as our passes, we definitely connected a lot more and had more opportunities up top with our outsides moving up when needed. When I scored, I felt super excited because I had people in the stands watching and it being the game winning goal made it so much better, I couldn't have done it without the hustle of my teammates and Kendyl's amazing cross."
Â
The Knights, now hungry for anothe win, will host cross-town rival Multnomah University Saturday, Oct. 5 at 7PM.
