Ashland, Ore. | The Warner Pacific University Knights broke a 15-game, seven year losing streak to the Raiders of Southern Oregon in Saturday night's regular season closer. The Knights leave Ashland and head into the playoffs with a 79-73 win.
Â
Saturday's win moves the Knights to 13-15 overall and 10-10 in CCC play. Playoff seeding will be announced Sunday.
Â
Courtney Jackson had a career night in the upset, scoring 22 points in the second half and finishing with 25 points off the bench, going a perfect 9-9 from the free-throw line and grabbing nine boards. Behind her was
Darbi Pink with 18 points.
Â
Warner Pacific fought their way back from being down in the first 15 minutes of the game to head into halftime with a three-point lead over the then No. 3 seeded SOU Raiders.
Â
It looked as though tonight's game would be a repeat of last night's; the Knights giving up a lead only to come up short at the end, but Coach Gregg's girls made it clear that wouldn't be the case. After a low scoring WPU third quarter, the Knights trailed by six with just one quarter of play remaining.
Â
The last quarter of action was one of excitement –
Courtney Jackson started out the fourth scoring all eight of Warner Pacific's points to start and assisted on a
Darbi Pink three that took the lead from the Raiders with five minutes to go.
Â
For the last four minutes the Knights continued to fight, responding on any Raider bucket with one of their own. Down the stretch, the Knights went 5-6 from the charity stripe and were able to seal the victory there.
Â
With the win, the Knights will likely turn right back around and face the Raiders once again, this time in the Quarterfinals of the CCC tournament on Tuesday, February 25
th. The official scheduled will be posted Sunday.
