Women’s Soccer Battles Valiantly, Falls in OT to Evergreen

Olympia, Wash. | What started as a complete turnaround from yesterday's game came to a bitter end this afternoon for the Warner Pacific University Women's Soccer team (3-8, 2-6), who fell to The Evergreen State College Geoducks (3-9-1, 3-6) in overtime by a score of 2-3.

After failing to score in their last match against Northwest University, Warner Pacific flipped the script in the first half of today's game when they entered the halftime period with a 1-0 lead over the Geoducks. Knights' senior midfielder Courtney Cutter shot a perfectly placed corner kick into the back of the net, just barely avoiding the reaching arms of Evergreen State goalkeeper Lucky Backus.

Just five minutes into a score heavy second half, Geoducks' forward Madison Spenker scored on a deep ball from well outside the penalty box and over the head of Knights' senior goalkeeper Isabell Bauer.

Warner Pacific goal leader and junior forward Maddie Goss would get in on the scoring action next, as she took the penalty kick opportunity for the Knights in the 61st minute. Despite a correct guess by Backus on which side of the goal Goss would attempt to score on, she still managed to place it just out of reach, putting the Knights back up by one goal.

Spenker would then score again 18 minutes later on an assist from defender Julie Hass to equalize this game at 2 goals apiece, proving to be a match of equal intensity for both squads on the field from the opening kick.

Almost an entire overtime period later, Geoducks' defender Sunny Bieber put this game to an end with another long shot goal for Evergreen State from just outside the penalty, which once again skimmed over the fingertips of Bauer. Defender Sam Lindsay found Bieber on the game-winner from the left-side of the goal to ice this one in OT.

The Knights will embark on their longest conference road trip of the season next week when they travel to Billings and Great Falls, Mont. to face off with Rocky Mountain College and the University of Providence, respectively. Both games will begin at 1pm MST, or 12pm PST if you're tuning in online from the Portland area.
