Salem, Ore. | The Warner Pacific University Men's Soccer team (7-2, 4-1) couldn't shake an early first half goal and questionable second half goal by the (RV) Corban University Warriors (5-3, 4-1) to pull off the road upset in Salem, Ore. today, falling by a final score of 1-2.
Corban opened the scoring in the 13
th minute on a deflection off of Knights' senior goalkeeper
Alexis Calderilla-Hurtado, as forward Reggie Reyes found an open net when Calderilla-Hurtado tried to clear the ball right into the foot of Warriors' defender Evan Hoover. The deflection was enough to provide Reyes the opportunity he needed for the opening goal.
Many missed opportunities later by both teams, including a ball that came within inches of crossing the goal line for Knights' senior forward
Arturo Bahena, the Warriors scored their second goal of the game off a header from midfielder Edson Jimenez. After what seemed to be an incredible diving save from Calderilla-Hurtado, the line-judge referee determined that enough of the ball had crossed the goal line to provide the Warriors with an insurance goal and a 0-2 lead. Corban midfielder Nate Sherwood was credited with the assist on the 85
th minute goal.
Determined to not leave this contest without putting up a fight, the Knights retook possession and rushed down the field to secure a free kick opportunity for senior defender
Miguel Andalon-Ordaz. Having scored multiple times on these opportunities already this season, Andalon-Ordaz proved himself once again with a beautiful shot into the top left corner of the goal, well over the reaching arms of Warriors' goalkeeper Justin Keegan.
However, it proved to be too little too late for Warner Pacific, as the Warriors played keep-away for the last minute and a half of gameplay to secure their first home victory of the season.
Warner Pacific looks to get back into the win column tomorrow at 12:30pm PST when they travel a little further south to Eugene, Ore. and battle the Bushnell University Beacons (1-7, 1-4).
