PORTLAND | The Senior Night hype wasn't enough for the Warner Pacific University Women's Soccer team (4-11, 3-9) to pull off the upset over the reigning Cascade Collegiate Conference champion Oregon Tech Owls (14-2, 11-1), who captured their 3
rd straight title tonight in a 1-3 Knights loss.
With Senior Night recognition for the nine WPU student-athletes before tonight's match, all eyes turned to midfield to congratulate these young women on their success and accomplishments on the soccer pitch donning the Warner Pacific blue. Seniors
Makayla Martinez,
Addison Doyle,
Alanna Smith,
Brenna Smith,
Makenna McClellan,
Isabell Bauer,
Ciel McDonald,
Gaby Bowman, and
Miki Dart all met their families and friends with presents and gifts aplenty to help celebrate their on-field and off-field accomplishments while a Knight at Warner Pacific University.
Tonight's match began with rather stingy defense for both teams before Owls' forward Kiah Wetzell found the back of the net with a ricochet shot off of Knights' goalkeeper Bauer. After bouncing around in front of the net for what felt like an eternity, Wetzell found the opportunity to break the scoreless tie, and put the Knights on the offensive.
In what seemed like a storybook type setting for Knights' midfielder Doyle, the opportunity arose for her to send back a batted ball from Owls' goalkeeper Alyx Burkhartzmeyer, slipping right between her legs for the Knights to tie this game up at one goal apiece.
Determined to walk away with the CCC Regular Season Championship title, Oregon Tech forward Nyah Kendall forced the issue for the Owls from the opening minute of gameplay in the second half, scoring in the 48
th minute and 82
nd minute to seal the deal for the Owls. Oregon Tech earned themselves the #1 seed in the Conference Tournament, and an Automatic Qualification to the National Tourney.
The Knights end the 2021 regular season at 4-11 overall, and 3-9 in conference play with 12 goals scored, 6 assists, and 30 points scored, which is a significant improvement from last season's end result. Knights' Head Coach
Josh Westermann looks to replace nine senior players this off-season, most notably to replace two senior goalkeepers and a majority of his defensive unit.
