Ashland, Ore. | The final regular season game is in the books for the Warner Pacific University Women's Volleyball team (2-23, 2-20), as they were defeated by the Southern Oregon University Raiders (14-13, 9-13) in straight sets at the Lithia Motors Pavilion, 12-25, 18-25, 11-25.
A tough end to the conference season for WPU, as their offensive woes continued from last night, only producing 17 kills in the match as a team. The Raiders were able to convert where they wanted to on sight, scoring 43 kills at a .388 kill% for the night.
Tying for the game-high in kills tonight was senior outside hitter
Grace Buchanan, who with 10 kills tonight, clinched the conference crown in total kills for the 2021 season with 390 kills on the year, and an average of 4.47 kills per set. Buchanan led the category by over 40 kills, followed by Southern Oregon's outside hitter Hailey Van Well, who ended with 349 kills this season.
Defensively for the Knights, sophomore defensive specialist
Abby Alvaro-Thomas secured 6 digs, while freshman libero
Sabah Mohammady added 5 digs to the mix. Senior setter
Matalasi Laban finishes her college career with 13 assists on the evening.
Raiders' Van Well knotted Buchanan with 10 kills of her own, while middle blockers Sadie Byrd and Simone Gordon added 9 kills apiece for Southern Oregon. Defensive opportunities came at a minimum for both squads tonight, as libero Kadyn Jones, who was also the lone senior recognized for Senior Day for the Raiders, had a game-high 9 digs for the match.
The Warner Pacific Women's Volleyball team ends the season at 2-23 overall and 2-20 in conference play, and 11
th in the Cascade Collegiate Conference standings. With two student-athlete setters and outside hitters graduating this spring, head coach
Nels Norquist will look to revamp his offense for the 2022 fall sports season.
