College Place, Wash. | After a minor setback yesterday, the Warner Pacific University Women's Basketball team (7-5, 5-2) bounced back in style to defeat the Walla Walla University Wolves (1-13, 0-7) by a final score of 70-48 on Windemuth Court to stay in the race for the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championship.
The full-court pressure defense from Warner Pacific left a limited Wolves' roster looking for answers to the press from the very beginning, as the Knights jumped out to an early double-digit lead with just under four minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Offensive intensity from all angles of the court has been something the Knights have missed during their last few outings, but that wouldn't be the case in today's contest. While WPU couldn't connect on missed opportunities, the Knights still outscored the Wolves 17-9 in the first 10 minutes of action.
After being outscored 4-15 by the Wolves to open the second quarter, Warner Pacific went on a 6-15 run to end the half, leading to a 6-point halftime lead for the Knights. Despite a 20-17 rebounding advantage and a 6-11 turnover advantage, the Knights were unable to capitalize from beyond the three-point line, or when drawing fouls in the paint. WPU shot a lowly 22% from beyond the arc, and only two free throw attempts to the Wolves' 10 for the first half.
The Knights wasted no time rebounding from a second quarter relapse, outscoring Walla Walla by nine points to take a 15-point lead over the Wolves into the fourth quarter. By this point, Knights' senior forward
Hannah Myers already had 25 points, in her attempt to break her career-high.
Warner Pacific was finally able to pull away from the home Wolves in the fourth quarter, scoring at will to stretch the lead out of striking distance for the short-staffed Wolves, securing their fifth conference win in seven games so far this season.
Myers ended her night with the game-high 25 points she had going into the final quarter, as she wasn't able to extend her point total due to a much needed fourth quarter rest for the 5'9 senior. She ends her quick midweek road trip with 50 total points in two games, the first time she has had back-to-back 25-point games in her career.
Senior guard
Anna Farner continues to lead by example and stuff the stat sheet for the Knights, as she scored four points and accounted for seven assists and eight rebounds in today's contest.
Walla Walla guards Carolina Montes and Clara Wiltgen scored 19 and 16 points for Walla Walla, respectively, and guard Paulina Quintana secured an even eight points and eight boards to lead the team in rebounds.
Due to the delayed matchups with Lewis-Clark State and Walla Walla, the Knights will travel to Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, Ore. on a quick turnaround schedule this week for their Friday night matchup with the Mountaineers at 5:30pm PDT.
