PORTLAND, Ore.| The Knights were able to fend off the Lions and hold on to a 1-0 lead to get the win over Multnomah in their matchup on Friday.
One goal in the sixth minute was all it took for the Knights to get the win over cross-town rival Multnomah.
The Knights were able to put pressure on Multnomah to open up the game. Although it didn't always translate into shots, the Knights controlled possession and kept Multnomah on the defensive in the first half. Constant corner kicks for the Knights kept the momentum in Warner's favor early on.
The lone goal for the Knights came early on off of one of the aforementioned corner kicks. The kick from Brianna Garfias sent the ball into traffic in front of Multnomah's net where Knights freshman Payton Ashley stayed with the ball and was able to score amidst all the movement to record her first goal of the year.
The Knights retained control after the goal, not allowing the Lions to attempt a shot in the first half.
The game dynamics flipped in the second half. Multnomah came out of the break much more aggressive and began to control the pace of the game.
As the game wore on, the Lions inched closer and closer to tying up the game, but steady defense from the Knights kept any Multnomah threats from materializing. In the 81st minute, Knights goalkeeper Kate Pomerinke took flight and made an incredible diving save to reject a screamer of a shot from the edge of the penalty box. The Lions had one final offensive opportunity in the 87th minute with a close-range shot that ricocheted off the cross bar.
The game was the fourth shutout of the year for freshman goalkeeper Kate Pomerinke, who recorded three saves on the day.
The win puts the Knights at 5-6-1 on the season. Women's soccer is in action again October 14, when they take on Evergreen at Eastside Timbers Complex.
