Olympia, Wash. | The Warner Pacific University Men's Basketball team (13-12, 9-8) has found their groove coming into the final three weeks of the regular season, cruising to the dominate 92-47 road victory on Friday night over The Evergreen State College Geoducks (3-18, 3-14) at the Costantino Recreation Center.
Â
The Knights took their time accessing this conference rematch for the majority of the first half, but started to find their rhythm near the midway point to quickly grow a double-digit lead to 21-10 over the home team Geoducks. Senior guard
Isaac Etter continues to shoot the three-ball extremely well, hitting his first two attempts of the evening right out of the gate.
Â
Warner Pacific continued to push the ball hard on the offensive end, resulting in points on seamlessly every trip down the court. Meanwhile, the Geoducks couldn't buy a basket from the field thanks to the Knights' lockdown defense, resulting in a 16-point lead with a little over six minutes remaining in the first half before Geoducks' Head Coach Tim Malroy was forced to take his first timeout of the game to regroup.
Â
Feeling the momentum completely in their own control, the Knights offense couldn't be stopped following Evergreen's called timeout, extending to a 19-point lead before Knights' Head Coach
Jamayne Potts called a quick timeout following another Warner Pacific Basket to give his squad a much needed rest.
Â
Etter decided to take this game into his own hands the last two minutes before halftime, hitting the heat-check three-pointer to splash three straight buckets from beyond the arc, outscoring Evergreen State 9-0 all on his own during that span. Etter's quick burst led to a sizeable 48-25 point lead entering the midway point of the game, as he was leading all scorers with 20 points on 5-of-6 field goals from three-point range.
Â
Knights came out of the gate strong in the second half, but started to slow down offensively, allowing the Geoducks to outscore them 11-7 in the first five minutes. Warner Pacific left empty handed on the offensive end time-and-time again to open the half, which is not to say they didn't have plenty of opportunities, as plenty of credit goes due to the fast-paced Geoducks' defense.
Â
However, the Knights' offense struck gold once again, growing a sizable lead to over 30 points with roughly six minutes remaining, sitting at 78-42 in favor of Warner Pacific. Coach Potts was able to tap deep into his bench following the next deadball, giving his starters and key reserves a much deserved rest for the remainder of the game.
Â
The WPU reserves made their presence known over the final few minutes of regulation, outscoring the Geoduck starters and reserves by a considerable 14-5 margin on Evergreen State's home court. Another offensive outburst for WPU resulted in their fourth straight dominate victory, this time over Evergreen State.
Â
Due to the substantial lead, Etter rested a majority of the second half, finishing the game with his 20 first half points to lead all scorers, despite only playing 22 minutes in total. Junior guard
Thomas Miles came off the bench to add 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals, joining Etter as one of the five WPU student-athletes to score in double-digits tonight.
Â
Geoducks' guard Austin Curry clinched a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds in Evergreen State's efforts tonight, registering a block as well in 29 minutes played. Guard Mitch Wetmore added 10 points to the mix for the Geoducks, while also nabbing a pair of steals.
Â
Warner Pacific Men's Basketball will look to extend their win-streak tomorrow evening, as they travel to Kirkland, Wash. to battle the Northwest University Eagles at approximately 5pm PDT, following the conclusion of the WPU vs NU Women's Basketball game.
