PORTLAND | Warner Pacific University Athletic Director, Matt Gregg, has announced the addition of Esports to the fold starting this upcoming school year. Esports is one of the fastest growing sports in the country and we are looking to be a part of that wave that is growing quickly on the west coast.
With this new sport, naturally, it needed a modern room to call home. The Esports gaming room will be located in the bottom of the library in a newly renovated room complete with new paint, a huge logo, state of the art computers, keyboards, chairs, and headsets. The network will also be getting a facelift which will not only make gaming more smooth, but will also extend to all of Warner Pacific community which will increase productivity everywhere on campus as well. Everyone will benefit from this new venture.
Our Esports program will start off by competing in three games. Super Smash Bros, Rocket League, and League of Legends. "In researching Esports, I have learned a lot about the make-up of a team, program and titles of games that seem to be most popular," Gregg said. "From discord servers to twitch and the addition of cross platform gaming, this has been very eye opening and I learn something new every day."
This venture will hopefully be a catalyst to get more high school gamers interested in coming to the Warner Pacific to get a good education and to continue their gaming career. "Our goal is to roll Esports out this fall and we are hoping to have a good number of new athletes to participate," Gregg said. "With the soon to be completed Esports room, people can look forward to watching our athletes compete through streamed events. We are very excited to venture out into the world of gaming."
This is an exciting time for Warner Pacific Athletics. Make sure and continue to check our website and socials for more updates regarding our Esports program as well as all our other athletic programs. 2023 will be a year to remember and we hope that everyone is excited as we are.
