Briana Munoz Homers Twice in Loses to Southern Oregon

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – March 2nd, 2024

Happy Valley, Ore.| The Knights played a tough doubleheader to open up their conference season today against second-ranked Southern Oregon and lost both games by scores of 11-2 and 12-2.

Game One
The Knights in the first game started out strong only giving up 2 runs on 4 hits to a very good Southern Oregon team. Unfortunately, the Raiders adjusted well the second time through the order to Knights pitcher, Briana Munoz, and broke the game open in the third inning adding 3 runs making the score 5-0. In the bottom of the third, Briana Munoz nailed a dinger to left field that she impressively didn't even seem to get all of. Munoz helped herself earning back a couple of the runs that had been given up on the defensive side. It was her first home run of the season and the first for the Knights as a team.

The Raiders continued to have a great game offensively as they ended up scoring 6 more runs in the ball game in the last couple innings to end the game after the fifth inning. Raiders pitcher, Katie Machado, had a great day pitching the full 5 innings striking out 13 Knights batters, gave up the 2 runs, and walked 4 batters. Sometimes in softball you just run into a pitcher that is on her game and that's what happened to the Knights today.

Game Two
The Knights played pretty well for 4 out of the 5 innings played in this game. Kili Makanani got the start in this game and got into a bases loaded jam in the first inning but got out of it with fairly minimal damage only giving up two runs on a base hit. Brianna Munoz continued right where she left off in game one hitting another dinger in the bottom of the first inning to the exact same spot in left field. Super impressive power shown today by the junior transfer from Allan Hancock College.

The second inning is what did the Knights in today when the Raiders scored 10 runs on 8 hits. The Raiders knocked out Makanani after 1.1 innings when she gave up 7 earned runs in the second inning. Abby Carlson came in inheriting a tough situation with girls on base and gave up 3 more with only 2 of them being earned. After that inning though, Carlson pitched very well and had 3 clean innings to end the day. The Knights second run of the game came on a classic pull shot jack from Jordan Rosario who led of the inning. This was her first home run in her two-year career for the Knights so definitely a huge moment for her.

Next Up
The Knights move to 0-8 overall and 0-2 in conference play. They will play two more games tomorrow against #2 Southern Oregon at 11am and 1pm out at Hood View Park. The first game will be a conference game and the second will be considered as a non-conference matchup.
