Medford, Ore.| The Knights finished the job in Medford beating Carroll College in the CCC Championship Game in overtime by a final score of 2-1.
The Saints may have won the first match the two teams played back in Montana by a final score of 2-0 but this game wasn't anything like that. This game was as evenly matched as you could have hoped for a heavy weight championship bout. Both teams played extremely fundamentally sound the entire way and the three total goals put in by both teams were as competitive as can be. After the first half, both teams went to their corners to discuss what was a 0-0 tie. It would remain a 0-0 slobber knocker until the end of the 74
th minute when the Knights took the lead on a beauty sent in from
Bryan Carmona assisted by Wicho Gonzalez. It was a crazy sequence of events in a short amount of time starting with Mario Jauregui sending in a shot that was blocked by the Saints goalkeeper. After the blocked shot, the ball went straight to Wicho Gonzalez, and he put a shot up that once again was blocked out in front of the net. This time, the ball found its way right to Carmona who sent in a 15 yarder from left to right, getting it past the Saints keeper for the goal giving the Knights a 1-0 lead with 15 minutes left.
The Fighting Saints then showed why exactly they earned their nickname and fought back scoring a goal with about eight minutes left in regulation. It was a spectacular bicycle kick off the foot of Felix Billard that tied the game back up at one apiece. Nobody scored the rest of the way and when the final whistle blew on regulation, the Knights realized they'd be playing at least ten more minutes of golden goal soccer.
Both teams had a couple of chances in overtime, but it was the Knights who walked away champions. The Saints, with about three minutes left in the overtime period, committed a foul awarding the Knights a freekick that was sent in beautifully by
Sergio Varela to the back right post and Bryan Sanguino was right there to collect it and head it into the net to end the contest. Pandemonium ensued as the field was rushed by players and coaches on the Knights bench and all the Knight fans that made the four-hour drive down from Portland.
