PORTLAND, Ore. – Whitman College broke open a close game by making 22-27 tries from the charity stripe in the second half, and cruised to a 77-57 win at Warner Pacific in a non-conference matchup in Portland.
The host Knights (5-6, 1-2 CCC) trailed by just one, 29-28, at halftime thanks to 50 percent shooting (10 of 20). The Missionaries (9-1, 2-0 NWC) managed to score at just a 38 percent clip, but made up for the disparity by grabbing 12 offensive rebounds resulting in six second chance points.
Whitman slowly pulled away in the second period with help from Knight defenders. Warner Pacific was whistled for 18 fouls after halftime alone, leading to 22 points for the Missionaries at the foul line. Rebounds continued to bounce the Missionaries' way, as Whitman finished with 42 rebounds for the game compared to 24 for WPC.
Heather Johns and Sarah Anderegg each scored 14 points to lead Whitman. Meghan White grabbed a team high nine rebounds.
Warner Pacific was led by
Chelsey Christensen with a game high 19 points.
Tori Carroll added 10 points and five rebounds.
