WP Women Secure Rivalry Win

PORTLAND, Ore. - Warner Pacific held off a late comeback attempt from cross-town rival Concordia University to secure their seventh Cascade Conference win tonight at Cavalier Court, 69-57.

The Knights (11-8, 7-3 CCC) enjoyed as much as a 16 point lead toward the end of the game, only to see CU climb back to within seven points (62-55) with 1:13 to play. WP made 7 of 8 free throws in the final minute however, to preserve the key victory.

It was the host Cavaliers (8-12, 2-8 CCC) that held were the aggressor during the opening minutes of the contest. After a steal and layup from Kelly Huey at the 12:35 mark, CU was ahead on the scoreboard 15-9. Later, after Gabi Beyer put the Cavs up 19-16 with a jump shot, Warner Pacific proceeded to go on a a 14-0 run and did not trail again. Taylor Wofford gave the Knights a spark off the bench with 10 first half points, helping WP to a 32-23 at the halftime buzzer.

Warner Pacific shot 45 percent as a team in the first half, and continued to score with accuracy in the second. Though CU kept the margin within single digits for a time, the Knights slowly pulled away. A Chelsey Christensen basket in the lane gave WP their largest lead (55-39) with 6:12 showing on the scoreboard and the game seemed well in hand.

The Cavs responded with a 13-4 burst that made the Warner Pacific advantage just seven points, but Christensen scored inside and was fouled at that point which effectively ended the threat. 

Christensen, the CCC's scoring leader, continued her hot streak with 27 points on 11 of 16 shooting. Nichole Jackson added a season high 12 points and aslo dished for 12 assists. 

Gabi Beyer led Concordia with 20 points and five rebounds, and Malori Dixon added 12 points.
