Knights Break Through for First CCC Win

Ali Campbell
Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. - Warner Pacific women's basketball claimed their first Cascade Conference win of the season with a 65-62 decision over College of Idaho at C.C. Perry Gym.

The host Knights (5-10, 1-3 CCC) used a stingy zone defense to hold C of I to 34 percent shooting on the night. The Yotes (6-7, 3-2 CCC) tried to solve the congestion in the paint with long range shooting, but made just 5 of 28 tries from behind the arc.

Baskets were hard to come by for both sides in the early action, and the teams battled to a 19-19 tie after the opening 13 minutes. The Yotes moved ahead to a 28-23 advantage on an Aleah Lowber trey, but Lorena Torres converted a short jump shot in the final minute for WP to close the gap to a single point at half time (30-29).

After Dayna Drager hit a three pointer on the opening possession of the second period, C of I would not score again for six minutes. The Knights used the drought to score 14 unanswered and take control of the game. Ali Campbell came off the bench to post 15 points and 11 rebounds, and her layup with five minutes gone in the second half gave WPC their largest lead of 10 points (43-33).

The Yotes made a late push thanks to a pair of steals leading to scores in the final minute, including a three pointer from Erica Martinez that cut the WPC lead down to two points (64-62) with 16 seconds on the clock. Jessica Thoens made an all-important free throw for WP however, and Elisha Hensey's game tying attempt at the buzzer was off the mark.

Campbell's team high effort was her third double-double of the season. Jordan Wilcox added 13 points including three makes from three point range. Jessica Thoens contributed four points, seven assists, and four steals.

Chakala Carthen poured in a game high and career best 27 points for the Yotes, and also added 12 rebounds.

COMING UP: Warner Pacific will go for the weekend sweep by hosting Eastern Oregon tomorrow night, January 4th, at 5:30 pm.
