SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University men's soccer team scored a goal in each half on Saturday en route to a 2-0 triumph over Warner Pacific College at Warrior Field.
Both teams started the game with chances on either end, as Warrior senior forward Derik Chaney found himself in on goal early in the match, but his shot went high and over the crossbar, keeping the contest scoreless. Warner Pacific answered right back with a chance of its own, as
Mario Guizar got behind the Corban defense and had a one-on-one opportunity, but Warrior senior goalkeeper Steven Mason made himself big and stoned Guizar with the point-blank save.
The Navy and Gold opened the scoring in the 19th minute when sophomore midfielder Quamie Dinnall beat his defender once, and then skillfully went past him again as he cut inside from the right side, and when he was 25 yards from goal, blasted a sizzling rocket into the top-right corner of the goal giving the Warriors the 1-0 lead. For Dinnall, it was his fourth goal of the 2014 campaign.
Neither side threatened the opposing team's goal significantly for the remainder of the first 45 minutes, and at the break, Corban maintained its one-goal advantage.
Warner Pacific held the slight shot advantage at the break, 8-6, and also tallied four corner kicks to just one for Corban.
In the second half, Corban came out firing, registering a couple of close opportunities right away, although neither resulted in a goal.
With the Warriors pressing, the second goal ultimately came when sophomore defender Tim Kagey blasted a long free kick forward, and Chaney was able to get his head on the ball, flicking it behind the Knights' defense. Walker, anticipating the flick, did well to get behind the defense and got to the ball just before Warner Pacific's goalkeeper did. Walker then deftly touched the ball out of the air and past the goalie into the back of the net. For Walker, it was his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Both Chaney and Kagey received assists on the play.
Guizar totaled a team-high three shots for the Knights (4-3-3, 3-2-1 CCC) as he looked like the most likely candidate to score for Warner Pacific all afternoon long.
Mason tallied three saves for Corban en route to his fourth-straight shutout and sixth overall on the year.
