WPC Holds Off Loggers for Home Victory

PORTLAND, Ore. - Warner Pacific used 51 percent shooting from the floor and a 37-44 effort from the free throw line to hold off Puget Sound tonight at Bart Valentine Court.

The Basics

• Score: Warner Pacific 102, Puget Sound 88
• Records: WPC (2-3), UPS (2-3)
• Location: Bart Valentine Court, Portland, Ore.
• The Short Story: After a hotly contested first half, Warner Pacific went on 9-0 run midway through the second half, breaking open a close game. The burst gave the Knights a 74-62 lead, and the advantage hovered around 10 points for much of the second period. UPS scored six straight to close to within five points (89-84) with three minutes to play, but WP made 10 of 10 tries from the free throw line down the stretch to salt away the win.

How it Happened

• The two teams traded baskets in the early stages, with the lead changing hands 11 times in the first eight minutes.
• The visiting Loggers managed to sneak ahead by five points (36-31) after a jumper from Andre Lewis at the 5:35 mark.
Adam Westfall responded for WPC with one of his three makes from behind the arc, sparking the home team to finish the half strong and claim a slim 50-49 lead at the break.

• UPS scored the first four points of the second half, but Warner Pacific regained the lead a few moments later on a Franky Johnson free throw and would not trail again.
Charles Honest scored a tough interior basket and was fouled, and his conversion gave WP their largest lead (74-62) with 9:24 on the clock.

• Both teams continued to shoot the ball well, though UPS cooled off slightly to 42 percent in the second half while the Knights hit for 52 percent after halftime.
• Timmy Saunders scored six straight points for the Loggers to cut the gap to five points, but WP cashed in on free throws when it counted to keep UPS at bay.
