Knights Upset Portland State

PORTLAND, Ore. - Warner Pacific women's basketball knocked off NCAA Div. I Portland State today, 76-64 in inside the Stott Center. 

The Basics

• The Short Story: After three losses to NCAA Div. I teams in exhibition games, Warner Pacific claimed a win in their fourth try with a 76-64 decision over Portland State. The Knights took control in the 2nd quarter, outscoring the Vikings 18-11 to take a nine point lead into halftime. A key stat was 32 turnovers committed by PSU, leading to 25 points for Warner Pacific. 

How it Happened

• Portland State built an early lead of 21-14 in the first quarter, but WP closed the period on a 10-1 run to go ahead 24-22 and the Knights did not trail again. Kendra Preuninger nailed two three pointers to pace the visitors.
• Michaela Ray hit a three pointer to cut the Knight lead down to 34-33 with 4:32 left in the first half, but WP countered with nine straight points including four free throws from Daesha Jackson.
• The 3rd quarter belonged to Warner Pacific also, with the Knights extending their advantage to 16 points (62-46) thanks to consecutive buckets by Jackson to end the period.

• PSU cranked up the pressure in the final quarter and forced the Knights into six turnovers.
• The WP lead was trimmed to seven (62-55) after free throws from Corey James, but Taylor Howlett drained a huge trey on the ensuing possession to restore order.
• Preuninger scored six more points down the stretch to keep Warner Pacific firmly ahead, and the Knights celebrated the 12-point upset win.
