Buzzer Beater Sinks Warner Pacific in Home Opener

PORTLAND, Ore. - Kameron Hoyt drained a leaning 15 foot jumper as the buzzer sounded to send Cal Maritime to a 67-65 win over Warner Pacific tonight at Bart Valentine Court.

The Basics

• Score: Cal Maritime 67, Warner Pacific 65
• Records: WPC (0-3), CSUM (3-0)
• Location: Bart Valentine Court, Portland, Ore.
• The Short Story: Warner Pacific lost a heartbreaker in their season home opener, falling to Cal Maritime 67-65 on a buzzer beating score. The winning basket was 19th time the lead changed between the teams, and capped a night where the largest lead by either team was six points. The contest was a defensive battle, with shooting percentages for both teams in the low 40's.

How it Happened

• The evenly matched teams went back-and-forth from the start, with the lead changing hands 10 consecutive times in the first half.
Oleg Marandyuk hit a three pointer for WPC with 1:47 left in the first half to make the score 30-26, then Earl Jones canned a trey of his own one minute later to give the Knights their largest lead of the period at 33-28.
• Cal Maritime answered with a basket by Malik Edwards at the end of the half to trim the margin to three points.

• The Knights opened the second half with a triple from Franky Johnson and a layup from Charles Honest, which gave WP their biggest lead of the game at 38-32.
• The well went dry for the home team at that point, and the Keelhaulers took advantage with a 10-0 run.
• Jones broke the spell with his second three pointer of the game, but Cal Maritime eventually crept ahead and went in front 61-56 after a trey from Alec Fitzler at the 5:59 mark.
• Trailing 65-61, Warner Pacific managed to tie the game with free throws from Jones and Taylor Young.
• That set up the dramatic finish, which Warner Pacific will feel hard done by.
• Clayton White missed a pressured three pointer, but Maritime tracked down the offensive rebound. Then the Knight defense tipped a pass that bounced off the backboard, and straight to Hoyt who buried the game winner.
