1st Quarter Haunts WPC in Loss to Mounties

PORTLAND, Ore. - Eastern Oregon dominated the first ten minutes of play, then kept Warner Pacific at arm's length the rest of the way during a 82-61 win over the Knights at Bart Valentine Court.

The Short Story

The visiting Mountaineers opened the game with a hot hand, draining six three pointers while building a 31-11 lead after one quarter. EOU ended up making 10 of 15 tries from distance in the first half. The WPC defense could not find the formula for slowing down the Eastern attack and went into halftime behind 50-24. The 3rd quarter was a much better effort from the host team, cutting the lead down to 17 points. EOU kept a comfortable advantage however, and went on to the CCC victory.

How it Happened

• Jordan Klebaum was the catalyst for EOU's hot start, hitting her first three shots from distance to help stake a 13-4 lead.
• The Knights could not get much going offensively which led to several fast break conversions by Eastern Oregon. WOU ended the first quarter with a 8-0 run to lead 31-11 after one quarter.
• The Mounties continued the hot hand in the 2nd quarter, and Donneisha Webber's trey gave the visitors their largest lead of the game at 49-19 with 1:27 left in the first half.
• WP outscored Eastern 6-1 in the final moments to keep a glimmer of hope, though EOU was firmly in control leading 50-24 at the break.
• The lid lifted from the rim for WP in the 3rd, as the Knights outscored Eastern Oregon 24-17 in the period. Kyeli Hendryx scored 10 in the quarter.
• The gap hovered around 20 points however, and the Mountaineers made enough plays in the 4th quarter to thwart any comeback attempt.
