PORTLAND, Ore. – Warner Pacific ran their winning streak to four games, defeating Walla Walla University today 90-60.
The host Knights moved to 6-7 overall and 3-1 in Cascade Conference play. WPC has already surpassed their CCC win total from a season ago, and coach
Matt Gregg is encouraged about his group of players for the rest of the 17-18 campaign. "We are learning and growing every game," says coach Gregg. "Every player has contributed meaningful minutes this year, and having that deep bench will serve us well through the ups and downs of the year."
Walla Walla came into the game with a 2-5 record, but looked to make a good showing and were prepared for WP's full court press. The Wolves went down by nine early in the 1st quarter but trailed just 20-16 after the first 10 minutes. WWU kept it close thanks to a 16 of 18 effort from the free throw line in the first half.
Kendyl Cone took over the 2nd quarter for WP, dropping in 14 of her 17 points in the period and helping the home team to build a 16 point advantage at halftime (44-28)
The second half saw Warner Pacific slowly pull away thanks to dead-eye accuracy from behind the arc. The WWU defense focused on keeping the ball out of the lane, forcing WP to shoot over the top. Fortunately, the Knights were up for the task, hitting 15 of 33 tries from distance.
In addition to Cone's season best 17 points, Grace Prom led all scorers with 19 points off the bench for WPC.
Darbi Pink contributed 12 points and six assists as the Knights finished the game shooting 49.3 percent from the floor.
Sarah Halverson led the Wolves with 14 points, while Alyssa Blankenship added 12 points and eight rebounds.
