PORTLAND, Ore. -
De'Corrius Sampson-Young provided a dream ending to his final home game, as the senior hit a running shot in the paint with 1.4 seconds left to lift Warner Pacific over Northwest University, 76-75, at Bart Valentine Court tonight.
The shot capped a comeback in the final moments, with NU moving ahead 75-71 thanks to a pair of free throws from Justice Martion with 29 seconds left to play. The Knights then committed a turnover on their next possession which seemed to seal the game for the visiting Eagles.
With WPC pressing in the back court,
Collin Malcolm came up with a steal then streaked to the rim where he converted the layup and drew the foul. His successful free throw drew the Knights within one point.Â
After fouling on the inbounds pass, Warner Pacific was given the lifeline as NU missed the front end of a one-plus-one with six seconds remaining. The Knight moved quickly up the floor and found Sampson-Young on the left wing, who drove straight into the lane and finished in traffic to complete the comeback.Â
Northwest had 1.4 seconds to make something happen, but the inbounds pass was deflected away.
The Knights must wait for the outcome of the Corban-SOU game tomorrow to find out their opponent for the opening round of the CCC Tournament.
Sampson-Young finished with 17 points and six assists, while Malcolm added 16 points and nine rebounds.Â
Michael Dupree tossed in 25 points to lead Northwest, who will enter the CCC Tournament as the 5th or 6th seed.
