Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Offensive Outburst Sends WPU Men Past Lions

PORTLAND, Ore. – Warner Pacific scored the first eight points of the game and never looked back in a 109-65 win to their crosstown rivals Multnomah in Cascade Collegiate Conference men's basketball Tuesday night at Lytle Gym.

Xavier Cannefax hit a jumper for Warner Pacific off the opening tip, and the Knights added three more buckets as the Lions missed their first four shots.  A three-pointer by Brett Blackstock and a basket by Ben Grandle drew the Lions within four at 9-5 with 17:11 left in the half, but that was as close as the home team would come.  Cannefax scored again to give the Knights their first 10-point lead of 15-5 at the 16:01 mark, and they maintained a double-digit lead most of the period.  Darius Redrick hit a free throw for Multnomah with 1.3 seconds left, but the Knights threw a length-of-the-court pass to Cannefax for a layup at the buzzer that made it 47-27.

Warner Pacific's lead remained above 20 points throughout the final 20 minutes.  Their advantage hit 30 at 79-49 on a Kaleb Tompkins layup at 7:35, and 40 at 99-58 on three by Julian Downey at 4:01.  The final score was the largest margin of the game.

--- By the Numbers:  Statistics do not always tell the story of a game, but it would be hard to dispute the box score in this one.  Warner Pacific out-shot Multnomah from the field (.524, 44-84 to .352, 25-71), made more threes (12-8) and free throws (9-7), grabbed more rebounds (54-33, including 14-6 on the offensive glass), and had half the number of turnovers (6-12).  The Knights also had 48 points in the paint to 20 for the Lions.

Blackstock led the Lions in scoring for the sixth straight game with 13, Ben Grandle added 12 along with a team-high eight rebounds, and Jon Viles scored 11.  Redrick handed out five assists.

Collin Malcolm paced the Knights with 15 points, followed by Cannefax and Brandon Bell with 12 and De'Jon Bowman and Kadeem Minor with 10.  Malcolm had a game-high nine rebounds and passed out five assists.  Montel Shirley picked up three steals.

Multnomah fell to 4-15 on the season and 1-9 in the conference, while Warner Pacific improved to 14-6 overall and 9-3 in the CCC.
