ASHLAND, Ore. – The Brothers Cooper - Blake and Baylen - won individual titles for Warner Pacific at the inaugural Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships presented by U.S. Bank at Mountain Avenue Gym.
The pair were responsible for all the the Knight's team points for the tournament (39.5), as no other WP wrestler could muster a victory on the mat.
Blake Cooper, the 165-pound champion, and Eastern Oregon's Drake Randall, the 157-pound champion, were voted Outstanding Wrestlers of the Tournament. Menlo's Joey Martinez was chosen CCC Coach of the Year.
Baylen Cooper gave Warner Pacific a second title at 149-pounds and was the only unranked wrestler to pull off the feat.
"I am really excited for Blake and Baylen," said coach
Frank Johnson. "Blake is itching to make another run at a national title, and if Baylen wrestles like he did today he will have a great tournament. That being said, the event today did not go as planned. We had close matches up and down the weight classes but we came up empty time after time. I feel terrible especially for seniors Josh (Johnson) and Joe (Dickinson). We really felt like the guys were ready, but it wasn't to be."
Team Scores – T-1. Menlo (Calif.) 120, T-1. Southern Oregon 120, 3. Providence (Mont.) 119, 4. Montana State-Northern 117, 5. Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) 98.5, 6. Eastern Oregon 76, 7. Warner Pacific 39.5, 8. Simpson (Calif.) 11.5
