Evergreen Outlasts WPU in Five Sets

PORTLAND, Ore. - Warner Pacific posted a 2 sets to 0 lead over Evergreen, but surrendered three straight to fall in a five set thriller to the Geoducks inside C.C. Perry Gym.

Set one looked to be a win for Evergreen as they controlled the action and led 22-16. WPU ran off nine straight points to claim the set behind the serving of Lauren Tennyson and five kills from Melisa Ljuca.

Set two was close all the way with four lead changes and eight tie scores. WP edged in front 21-17 after a Geoduck error, then got two more Ljuca kills to close out the set.

Warner Pacific had every intention to complete the sweep in set three, and surged out to a 17-11 advantage. The Geoducks came back thanks to six hitting errors from WP and a few timely kills to take the frame 25-22.

The errors continued for WP in set four, starting with three straight. Then two kills by Evergreen's Renita Gray put the Knights in a 5-0 hole. The Knights tried to rally and closed to within 21-16, but no closer.

The deciding set was there for the taking for the home team, as WPU crept ahead to lead 10-7. Two kills from Natalie Taylor kept Evergreen alive and three more miscues by The Knights gave the set and match to the Geoducks.

Melisa Ljuca led all players with 28 kills, while Lauren Tennyson added 15 kills and 19 digs. Meghan Turner was a dynamo on the back row, racking up 34 digs.

Evergreen was paced by Natalie Taylor's 21 kills and 14 digs. The Geoducks were solid at the net, posting 18 blocks compared to six for WPU.
